Editorial Reviews: From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Comment: We recieved the DVD in a very timely matter, but when we actually opened the DVD, we knew immediately that there was something wrong with it. The picture on the front of the DVD looked like it had been printed on a printer that was running out of ink and was very smudged. We tried to get the movie to play on 3 different dvd players and could never get it to work. The bonus disc worked fine, but not the actual movie disc. I dont know much about bootleg movies, but if I was too guess, I would say this was one. I would like to say though, that we did recieve an immediate response, when we emailed about the problem, and I had a credit on my credit card by the next day. Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful movie! Comment: I was upset to find that the Little Mermaid was no longer available in stores, so I was thrilled to find it here. While it may seem a little pricey for a kids DVD, my daughter loves it so much that it has already paid for itself. It's as wonderful of a movie as I remember from my childhood, with all the memorable songs. I'm glad that I got a chance to pass this movie on to my daughter. The colors seem brighter on the re-released version, but that may be because my tape was about 20 years old. Customer Rating: Summary: Disney At Its Best Comment: Of all the animated Disney classics, this has remained my favorite ever since it came out. It's not just the beautiful songs and haunting score. Nor is it just the stunning artwork. The charming characters are not the sole reason as well. It's a combination of all these factors and more that have made "The Little Mermaid" the masterpiece that it is. What's great about it, is how well it has stood the test of time. Granted, it's been "merely" 2 decades since it debuted, but it has quickly become an enduring classic. Each release on video or DVD sold millions of copies and the soundtrack went sextuple platinum. That's a classic right there. Of the animated classics Disney released in the 90's, "Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King" have undoubtedly remained the most popular. I urge anyone who doesn't own a copy of this "Special Edition" to go ahead and buy it. The film has never looked or sounded better.
